Reading

At Topcliffe Primary School we promote a positive culture of Reading, using a language rich environment and provide the children with opportunities to develop their love of reading across the curriculum. We recognise that Reading is the key to learning, therefore, we teach the basic skills of fluency and give children the confidence, desire and ability to express their views and opinions. Books are used as a basis for learning, pleasure, talk and play so the children can value and celebrate diversity in culture and language, through Reading.

Our children love to read! From Reception up to Year 6, we pride ourselves with how our children are immersed in arrange of different high quality texts.

At Topcliffe, Reading is taught in all of our classes with help from ‘Resilient Reader,’ from the very beginning of learning how to read, to the higher level skills of inference and deduction. Staff underpin their teaching by using Minerva Learning skills to ensure Reception through to Year 6, are equipped with all the skills they need to be confident readers.

Inclusion is at the heart of everything we do at Topcliffe. Whole class books are carefully selected to provide challenge for all. Reading lessons, tasks and materials are differentiated by the class teacher to meet the needs of individual children. Children identified as having Special Educational Needs may need greater differentiation of materials and tasks consistent with that child’s I.E.P. (Individual Education Plan). When necessary, suitable interventions will be put in place to support individuals with their fluency and comprehension. More able children will be challenged and motivated through extended opportunities.
