Languages Purpose of Study and Intent

Learning a foreign language provides our pupils with a valuable cultural, social and educational experience which provides an opening in to other cultures. At Topcliffe we are teaching our children Spanish. Our Spanish languages education encourages our pupils to be curious and deepen their understanding of the world and to express their ideas and thoughts in another language both when speaking and and in writing. Children spend time learning about the multi-cultural and multi-lingual world and extend their understanding by exploring the similarities and differences between English and Spanish.

It should also provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read great literature in the original language. Language teaching should provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries

Children in Key Stage 2 learn a Modern Foreign Language - Spanish. We have adopted Primary Languages Network Curriculum to support our teachers in delivering a well sequenced curriculum which focuses upon the development of key language skills and knowledge. As we are phasing in this new curriculum new in 2023 we have assessed the ability of the children to place them on the correct stage of teaching. This does mean that we have multiple year groups receiving the same stage curriculum at this point in order for children to develop a sound understanding of the basics in order to build upon in future learning.
