Pastoral
Our Pastoral Team play a vital role in supporting the wellbeing, safety and inclusion of every child in our school. Based on site, the team work proactively and responsively to support children emotionally, socially and behaviourally, while also promoting positive attendance and engagement with learning.
The Pastoral Team and Learning Mentors deliver a wide range of targeted interventions, both 1:1 and in small groups. These include sensory circuits, talking through play, LEGO therapy, ELSA sessions, friendship groups and other bespoke support designed to meet individual needs. Support may take place in the Mentor Room or within the classroom, ensuring children feel supported across all aspects of school life.
All members of the Pastoral Team are fully qualified Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs) and are well placed to support children with any worries or concerns they may have. Children are often supported through restorative and solution‑focused approaches, including the use of the Three Houses (hopes and wishes) tool, allowing them to express their feelings in a safe and structured way.
We are dedicated to supporting not only children, but their families too. Where appropriate, the Pastoral Team can offer support both in and out of school and work closely with parents and carers to ensure the best outcomes for each child. The team are experienced in signposting and supporting families to access a range of additional services, including Family Support, Early Help, emotional wellbeing services for children and families, Forward Thinking Birmingham, school nursing teams, medical professionals, Barnardo’s and Young Carers services.
Our Pastoral Team work closely with class teachers, senior leaders and wider staff to identify patterns, trends and emerging social needs, ensuring any concerns are addressed promptly and with purpose. They also maintain strong links with external agencies and are able to make referrals to services such as STICK, Compass and other specialist providers to ensure children receive the right support at the right time.
In addition, the team work closely with the WHMAT Integration Hub to support pupils presenting with more complex or challenging behaviours, and they actively engage with the Sanctuary in Castle Value, signposting families to further support available through associated organisations.
Through strong relationships, high levels of care and effective partnership working, our Pastoral Team ensure that every child feels safe, supported and ready to succeed.
